Retro record player glamed up

I couldn't believe it when some clients dropped off this record player. Not only is this a record player but also a reel to reel player. Amazing that this thing still works! They found it at an estate sale! What a cool treasure.

They wanted it to be updated though so it would match their decor. They wanted it a dark gray color. The fabric where the speakers were could not be changed as they did not want to take anything out from the inside to get to the fabric. Because of the orange shade of the fabric (is that a retro orange or what!) I thought it would look really cool if I added some copper to the details in the piece. Maybe glam it up and tie it in with the orange. I am so glad my clients trusted my call on this. What a difference that copper wax makes!

I had to be very careful painting in the area with the fabric so I used very tiny artists brushes. Yes, it took a while to get those areas all painted. I was so nervous I was going to get paint on that fabric! But thank goodness I did not get one drop of paint on the fabric.

I first cleaned it well, then put on 2 coats of shellac -read about prepping furniture here, -and then the graphite paint from Annie Sloan. Once the chalk paint was dry I started the waxing. I mixed up some clear wax and some dark wax and applied that. I put on 2 coats of wax (read about how to wax here). Once the wax was dry (I let it sit for a few days) I applied the copper wax. I used the copper wax that CeCe Caldwell makes. IT is such a great wax!

What do you think? Much improved now in appearance, right?

I have lots of how to videos on my YouTube channel.

More photo's of my work are in the Gallery.
